Family Papers, 1854-1932.

Family Papers, 1854-1932 and undated, include: Biographical Materials, 1887,1891; Family Correspondence, 1868, 1879-1889; and Business Correspondence, mostly related to lumber and timber lands, 1879-1891, 1897. Additional correspondence relates to the Republican National Convention, 1888; the education of his nephews at Michigan Military Academy (Orchard Lake, Mich.), 1879-1883; and General Orders, 1861. Extended family papers include correspondence and business papers, 1854-1932. For his wife, Martha, there is correspondence related to the building of Amasa's mausoleum and the Amasa B. Watson G.A.R. Post, including a 1912 meeting booklet listing the Post's officers and meeting days. Miscellaneous family land papers and a carte-de-visite of Amasa in his Civil War uniform complete the collection.

Amasa Brown Watson was born on Feb. 27, 1836 in Vermont. He came to Newaygo (Mich.) at age 27 and pioneered the old Newaygo Lumber Co. Watson was commissioned as Major of the 8th Michigan Infantry, a unit he raised, on Aug. 19, 1861. He was shot through the thigh on Jan. 1, 1862 and resigned on Sept. 10, 1862, receiving an honorable discharge. On Oct. 7, 1865 he married Martha Brooks.
